Catchment Systems Thinking, also known as CaST is United Utilities’ innovative approach to managing catchments in a holistic and integrated manner, understanding the needs of the whole catchment, whislt considering what is best for the environment and communities. By considering the whole catchment holistically, CaST views water and wastewater in an integrated way, meaning we consider the environment as a connected system, as opposed to siloed processes. As a custodian of the natural environment, with 56,000 hectares of land in the North West, United Utilities have applied catchment based approaches on our land to deliver environmental and water quality improvements for many years to come. CaST supports collaboration and partnership working in order to promote natural capital benefits for the environment – delivering cost-effective solutions. The CaST approach encourages us to think differently and goes beyond our catchment land, looking at the wider environment, incorporating natural capital decision making to consider what is best for the environment, customers and communities by integrating risks and driving multiple natural capital benefits.
